A Slam Dunk for the Champions!
Family-friendly fun and fundraising were the highlights of this exciting annual event for Mary's Meals
This week was the 5th Annual Basketball Bonanza for Mary's Meals. Organized and run by volunteers for Mary's Meals, this basketball event has become a beloved occasion that students, teachers, families and participants look forward to every year.
From the tip-off to the final buzzer, the police and fire teams did not disappoint, as usual. Spectators were treated to an action-packed basketball game.
Heritage Christian Academy hosted this year's festivities. Grades 5 - 9 participated in a skills training session run by Excel Basketball club coaches. Following a pizza dinner provided by Panago, the highlight of the evening was the highly competitve game between Calgary Police and Calgary Fire. With the Porridge Cup on the line, many were placing their bets on Calgary Police to retake the trophy, as they have been the reigning champs - going undefeated so far.
A few first-quarter glitches with the score clock made things a little too exciting, however this was quickly resolved and the rest of the game proceeded smoothly.
In an exciting turn of events, Calgary Fire seemed unstoppable and maintained the lead for nearly the entire evening, eventually running away with the game and taking the title!
In an even bigger win, $2,754 was raised in total - enough to provide a daily meal in school for 86 children for one school year!
Other wins of the night included the biggest and most enthusiastic crowd yet for this event. Support for the police and fire teams - our local heroes - was evident throughout the evening, with spectators (including teachers, students, families and the families of the players) holding signs and cheering loudly when players entered the building. It's the kind of support and enthusiasm characteristic of our global Mary's Meals family!
At Mary's Meals, we depend on lots of little acts of love from members of our global family to help us achieve our mission. Even amidst the fierce competition, our Calgary family's little acts of love were evident throughout the evenint's event. Thank you to our volunteers and supporters, Heritage Christian Academy, Panago Pizza, Excel Basketball, Calgary Police Services and Calgary Fire Department for helping to make this another unforgettable event. Thank you!
