For Elizabeth, volunteering is her way of contributing to the education of her children and grandchildren.

Elizabeth mentioned that because the community is suffering, when she heard about the feeding program and the request for volunteer cooks, she immediately took on the challenge without hesitation.

“My daily tasks include sorting the beans and maize, organizing firewood, and washing the utensils. I am also involved in food measurement, [monitoring the] daily rations and preparation. With other volunteer cooks, I also serve the children with their daily meals.”

Elizabeth mentioned that the training on safety and hygiene has helped her and her fellow volunteers to know how to keep the food items safe and keep the kitchen clean. She believes that cooperation and collaboration has helped the school administration to deliver the school feeding program effectively. She has witnessed that with volunteer cooks playing their part, more children are able to come to school and progress through their education:

“The feeding program has contributed positively in this community. Many children are in school and parents are happy and not worried about the children going hungry the whole day while in school. This food is the driving energy in this community and for the poor people in this country. Thank You for the food.”

At Mary's Meals, nearly every part of our work depends on unpaid volunteers. Our school feeding programs are owned and run by community volunteers in the countries where we provide food.
