Mary’s Meals provides lifeline in Southern Africa’s food crisis

Malita, 33, along with her husband and six children, is struggling to survive amid Malawi’s worsening food crisis.

Severe flooding and drought have meant a pitiful harvest for the family this year, who have produced less than a quarter of the food they would normally expect.

Malita tells us: “Today, we have used up our last bit of harvest. I don’t know how we are going to cope. It has been difficult to ration the eating portions. Lately, to make the harvest last longer, we have been missing meals and not eating.

“I have never been through a crisis this bad and this is only the beginning. This year is the worst people have witnessed in Malawi.”

But thanks to your support, Malita’s children are guaranteed at least one nutritious meal each day – their mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals at nearby Mchenga Primary School.

Malita says: “The only consolation we have is that the children going to school will receive phala [porridge] and so will have at least something to eat.”
